Backtracking
Well Today was cloudy and cool, but a good day to work on the wall. I finished the initial groundwork and could really get going on the upright building of the wall. I was so impressed at how much faster the wall goes once the bottom course was going, I got ahead of myself.
I was going up..one, two, three courses of block and higher.
Each course is set back on the lower course about 1/2" which provides slight pressure against the earth / fill behind the wall.
I was up to about 7 or 8 courses (30") on much of the wall.
After every 2 courses, the idea is to backfill behind the blocks for stability. I was going along so well and the wall was looking so well, I decided to backfill all at once...when I was done with the wall.
At one point I tested the wall and gave it a slight shove, the wall semed to begin to tip backwards.
I then decided to start backfilling. I went up and loaded up the cart with the backfill (Gravel), but when I came back the wall had tipped over. I lost about 15 feet of the 40 foot wall.
Live and learn... but my back will not forget.
